The founding music director of the N.Y.S.E., Rebecca Roudman grew up in San Rafael, and
was Principal cellist in her school orchestras at Miller Creek Middle School and Terra
Linda High School. Coming from a musical family, Ms. Roudman began her cello studies at
the age of 7. During her childhood, Rebecca was Principal Cellist of the Marin Youth
Orchestra and won numerous competitions on her cello. Ms. Roudman was also a member
of the San Francisco Youth Orchestra and toured Europe as a member of the ensemble.
Ms. Roudman graduated cum laude from California State University, Hayward with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance.
Ms. Roudman has performed solos with the Marin Youth Orchestra, the Cal State Hayward
Orchestra, the Marin Chamber Orchestra, the Classical Philharmonic, the Ohlone College
Orchestra and the Community Women's Orchestra. From 1999 to 2001 Ms. Roudman was a
member of the Santa Cruz Symphony. Ms. Roudman has performed extensively with string
quartets including Che Bella, the Chamberlain Quartet (the quartet in residence at
California State University, Hayward) and the Capricollis String Quartet.
Ms. Roudman is currently a member of the Santa Rosa Symphony and the Oakland
East-Bay Symphony. In 2001, Ms. Roudman went on tour to Brazil with the San Francisco
Women's Philharmonic. She also works as a free-lance musician throughout the Bay Area.
Ms. Roudman has also performed with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra in a special
concert at Stern Grove in San Francisco.
In 2002- 2003 Ms. Roudman was the director of the pre-advanced string class in the
Marin Youth Orchestra's Crescendo program. In 2002-2008 she co-directed the Novato
Summer Music Institute. In 2003-2006 she was the string music teacher at the Novato
Charter School for grades 4-8. Ms. Roudman has directed the N.Y.S.E. since its founding in
January of 2002.
